Hey everyone, here's my potential basic layout for my final site on "The Singularity is Now."  You'll see that under a lot of the pages, I have Example/Discussion written.  I haven't quite settled on all of my real life examples that I'm going to use for those pages yet, so that's why it says that there...

Final Site plan
08:07pm 20/04/2009

Bojiggidy

For my final project, my plan is to hopefully create a site based around the concept that we are approaching the singularity as we speak.  My first page will be general info on the singularity, with the three sub-pages being some info on nanotechnology, robotics, and genetics (just basic background info here).  The next three pages will be more in depth about nanotechnology, robotics, and genetics, respectively.  For the three sub-pages for each topic area, my plan is to seek out some examples of instances of nanotechnology, robotics, and genetics, and to make some brief statements about the different examples.  Pictures all around...

I think this should make for an interesting and informative site for this final project...

2nd Life
10:17pm 15/04/2009

Bojiggidy
So on my own in 2nd Life, outside of class, I didn't really know where to go, so I decided to go back to the starting place where I began.  I wandered around some more, and also worked on changing up my appearance.  As cool as carrying a sword was, I opted to change out of my pirate costume (at least for the time being), and I altered some of the physical characteristics of my avatar.  I continued wandering around some of the starting area, and tried talking with people, but many didn't really seem like they were in the mood to chat too much.  Maybe it's because I was in a starting area, and people were being apprehensive about it.  Anyways, I was messing around with flying, and somehow strayed into an area where people had their own private homes there.  I didn't stay too long, because I received some sort of warning message across the top of my screen.  Needless to say, I left.

I got bored wandering around here, so I started trying to find some other places in SL to go check out.  I teleported to a place that apparently was supposed to have live music going, just to see what it was all about.  I arrived in the middle of a dance party, and as I got there, some people said hi, and a message from the club welcomed me and announced that I had arrived.  I stuck around there for a bit, talked a little with some people, and tentatively messed around with some of the dancing options that I could do, and then I moved elsewhere.  I found the Weather Channel had an area in SL, so I went to go see what was there.  There were all sorts of "experiences" that you could go participate in, like being in the waves in a hurricane, or skiing, and many other things like that.  I was going to try some of them, but they took money, and I had run out of time anyways, so I parked myself in a beach chair, and logged out.

Hey everybody, here's the link to my 4th Minisite on the Technological Singularity.  I occasionally ran into some little problems, but after messing around with CSS and different values and the like, I was able to make it all fit together quite nicely...

Websites that are good, and websites that suck...
07:04pm 23/03/2009

Bojiggidy
Since we've been looking into creating nice websites, sites that are easy to look at and navigate, it makes sense that one way of learning how to make a decent site is by looking at horrible websites that are confusing, and generally, suck.  Here's one example that I discovered of what I consider quite possibly the most terrible website every: http://www.havenworks.com/.  It honestly took me quite a while to decipher what is contained within the site.  It is so busy, with multiple colors, ads, and links.  There are so many different sizes of links, pictures, and text, that it makes it very difficult to look at.  It's so easy to get distracted by everything going on with this site that it is more than likely that even after a first glance, someone would want to navigate away from this site for fear of inducing brain damage.

I suppose one way of ensuring that your website will not suck as bad as the one above is to make it easy to look at and navigate.  If it appears pleasing to the eye at a first glance, then there is a greater chance that the viewer will stay on the website and look around.  As noted, because this particular site is such an eyesore, and is likely to give someone a headache if they look at it for too long, it is very likely that people will not spend a lot of time looking around.

Now for an example of a decent website: http://www.mail.com

I found this one easily, because it's one of the mail providers I use for my personal email.  What makes this site a decent one is that there is a lot of information, but it is presented in a very easy, almost relaxed way.  The color schemes are aesthetically pleasing, and the links and navigation bars are all very nicely displayed and put together.  The pictures are all comparable in style and size, the text and headings are all easy to read, and in general, mail.com just looks like a nice website to look through, in contrast to http://www.havenworks.com.

there you go...

Technology in 20 years...
04:03pm 19/02/2009

Bojiggidy
The way I see it, we will continuously be forced to adapt and alter the way we live and carry ourselves in this modern age of ever advancing technology.  When new technological advances come forward, some things will have to change.  My major concern is that as we start creating new technologies, or making technological leaps, humanity's excitement at what it is capable of will overshadow all other feelings with regard to the technologies they are creating.  Over excitement and enthusiasm will lead to people overlooking potential side effects or impacts of what they are building, and will cause them to push things as far as they can before they focus on the potential issues that their new advancement will bring about.
This is not to say that 20 years from now, technological advances will all lead to some negative end.  Some of my thoughts are currently influenced by the big amount of dystopian viewpoints that we have discussed from our recent readings in which people made arguments against the stage of technological advancement that we are currently in.  Certain technologies that are being researched will be able to do amazing things for improving the quality of life of humanity.  Genetically enhanced grains and other agricultural goods will be able to help people to grow enough to sustain life in poor agricultural regions.  Genetic- and nano-technologies will help to combat disease that affects people the world over.

These represent just a few examples of where technology may take us within the next several years.  It is tough to predict exactly what things will be like in 20 years, but there are some things that can be at least guessed about in an educated and informed matter.  Regardless, no one can disagree that evolving technologies will require evolved ways of behaving and utilizing those technologies.  Regulations, education, keeping people informed, and having a broad view of potential issues to arise from technologies MUST be a large focus in this process of advancement.   We need to have as keen an understanding of what we are getting ourselves into as possible if we are to get the best benefit from technological advances.

Blog 2......the mini-site
06:12pm 02/02/2009

Bojiggidy
Hey there...well, in terms of creating my mini-website, it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to focus on.  However, after some consideration, I figured that it might be interesting to create my mini-site about Artificial Intelligence (AI), containing some basic information on the subject within the sub-sections of the site.  The four subsections will most likely include:
- Background on what AI is.
- Different characteristics listing what makes or comprises something that is "artificially intelligent."
- How AI is tested/evaluated.
- Potential implications/criticisms regarding AI.

I feel like this should provide a decent amount of material to be able to create a nice little website with info, pictures and the like.  I don't really foresee any major issues in developing the site.

That's it......

Blog Assignment #1

In terms of robotics, technology seems to always be on the increase, with the main goal being the creation of robots that will, if not be as close to humanoid as possible, then to at least make use of certain aspects of human ability and physiology.  A recent article from the website ScienceDaily discusses the recent efforts with regard to the creation of robotic arms/hands modeled closely after human appendages.  Not only were the limbs modeled after human limbs, but the control mechanism for the robotic arm was modeled based on the human brain.

This provides an interesting subject for conversation with regard to how far, or to what length, scientists and engineers should go when working to design and create human-like robots.  It is interesting that they have started closely studying human physiology to be able to aid them in their technological endeavors in the creation of human-like robots.  The article points out one exampe that posed a problem for the developers - how to manufacture or create a "skin" for the robots that is able to simulate the sensitivity that human skin has.  In studying the brain and nerve receptor interaction with regard to pressure sensitivity in human skin, the scientists were able to create or develop synthetic skin with different pressure and temperature receptors throughout in their latest attempt to make as many aspects of their robotic products as close to human-like as possible.

In terms of my own life, I am not sure how I feel about potentially having to implement these technological advances in myself.  However, with the potential advantages and ongoing technological advances in this respect, it might not be a bad thing to work toward improving this technology.  Accident victims, wounded soldiers returning from war, and other amputees might have the potential to benefit quite strongly from the advances that this technology might be able to provide in terms of prosthetics and the like.    The concept of closely studying human physiology in order to help better improve and advance technology with regard to robot development will no doubt increase significantly. The way I see it, it is only a matter of time before more advances come about that make it almost inevitable before virtually everyone is using some of the technology.

who is me
09:26am 15/01/2009

Bojiggidy
Hello......my name is Cameron.  I'm a senior comm. major from The Woodlands, TX.  I'm a comm. management minor as well, and hopefully I should be graduating this May.  Then I have to get a job.  My goal is to hopefully find something to do involving advertising/PR, as that's what I'm interested in, and it's also what I worked on for my internship this past summer when I worked in Africa for seven weeks.

In terms of the major and minor, I'm already done with everything for both of them, so I'm taking this class as an elective, because I still need to complete the 124 hour requirement to graduate.  As I mentioned, my plan is to find a job after graduation, so we'll see how that goes...I'd like to also try and stay in San Antonio if I can, but if that doesn't work out, then I'd like to at least stay in Texas, because Texas is what I know, and it's the only state I've lived in since I first moved there in 1995.  Also, my parents live in The Woodlands, and my brother lives in Denton, so I have a lot of ties to Texas in that respect.

I mention first moving to Texas in 1995, because that was the first time I ever lived in the US.  It's not that I had never been to the states before, although I had never been to Texas.  I was born and I lived in England and Scotland until I first moved to Texas in 1995, so Texas really is the environment that I know best here in America.  I'd really like to be able to find a job that I can do in Texas at least in the short term.  I loved living in Europe as a kid, and I lived there again when I was older, so I definitely am used to moving around quite a lot.  I really would not mind if at somepoint in the future whatever job I have caused me to move or travel.  I'm kind of getting ahead of things here, so my goal for next year is to just be living and working somewhere in Texas....San Antonio preferably, but outside of that, somewhere in the houston or Dallas area would be great...

Anywho, that's all I really have to say about who I am and where I'm at right now...

Later,
Cameron
